The Best-Before Date of Silence

There is a silence that is fresh — the silence after a question, before the answer. And there is a silence that has turned: the silence of a room that used to hold a conversation, or the pause in a relationship where something that was said can no longer be unsaid.

Silence, like bread, has a best-before date. After it, it does not kill you. It simply no longer nourishes.
